Water - the source of all life. Ironically, 70% of the Earth's surface is covered with water, but only 0.3 % of all this water is available as drinking water.
Clean water is a limited and valuable resource. A resource with which specialty chemicals company LANXESS has been familiar for over 70 years. LANXESS has the world's largest state-of-the-art facility for the production of ion exchange resins for environmentally friendly water purification.
The new ion exchange resins plant in Jhagadia, India, is one such plant, poised for production in late 2010. It is the most advanced plant in Asia, serving growing regional and global demand.
Premium products such as Lewatit meet the most demanding requirements around the world - from pure water production for the power industry, semi conductor, pharmaceutical to chemical industry. This cutting-edge ion exchange technology removes unwanted chemicals from water to a very high grade in a reliable and environmentally friendly way.
This also comes as a boon to the people of northeastern states and Bangladesh where water in large quantities used for daily chores is cleaned up for arsenic and other heavy metals. The demand for clean water is also growing due to increase in population and urbanization in the region.
The wastewater treatment system that supports the ion exchange resins plant pre-cleans the wastewater before releasing it through the effluent pipe at the Jhagadia Chemical Park.
The new wastewater treatment plant ensures the effluent discharge from the plants complies with the environmental limits.
LANXESS has a green zone at the Jhagadia site with saplings plantation. The green initiative was started on World Earth Day 2009 in cooperation with the Gujarat Pollution Control Board and aims to plant about 3,000 trees.
The rubber chemicals plant produces the LANXESS Vulkanox brand antioxidants to the tyre market in India and the rest of the world.
Interestingly, being the largest LANXESS site in India, the Jhagadia plant is also one of the most modern plants in the whole of Asia.
LANXESS has about EUR 50 million in the joint plant and to create a huge jobs pool, for the local people.
With a great foresight, LANXESS has also built a natural gas-based co-generation plant, which produces electricity along with the steam supply. Thus saving the energy use.
The Jhagadia site is a certified ISO 9001 for quality and ISO 14001 for environment. It follows stringent safety standards with the goal of zero work related accidents.
Utmost care is taken to see that all emissions are within permissible limits. So much so that the off gas from the production process and storage are destroyed by incineration. The waste heat is used in the heat recovery boiler to generate steam.
The company takes extra initiatives to ensure that the plastic consumption is minimized through recycling.
